Trivia Nasties
Trivia nasties are what we call the rubbish that arrives on our computers - usually via email - that claims to be fact but is just... well... rubbish.
We'll keep adding to this page, but here are a few to start:
- A duck's quack doesn't echo.
Rubbish! Of course it echos. Why would ducks be the only creatures on earth not subject to the laws of physics. Perhaps, because of the nature of the sound of a quack, the echo can be hard to hear. Perhaps. - Charles Manson auditioned for the Monkees
Don't know where this came from - I heard it on the ABC's The Einstein Factor! The Monkees' auditions were in 1965. Charles Manson was in gaol from 1961 to 1967. Nuff said... unless they let him out for the day just for the auditions. - Marilyn Monroe was the model for Tinkerbell in the movie of Peter Pan.
Actress Margaret Kerry was the model for the now-familiar blonde fairy in her short green dress. - Giraffes have no voice
In fact, giraffes have an unusually large voice box. They were thought to be mute until the middle of last century when zoo keepers overheard them speak. The young bleat like cows and the females make a sound like 'wa-ray' Both males and females grunt and cough. - Donkeys/coconuts kill more people annually than plane crashes
Hmmm. Actually, it is possible. To prove this one, you would have to know how many people are killed each year by donkeys or coconuts, and those figures are not available. In 1999, there were a total 690 general aviation deaths world-wide. We would have to document more than 690 donkey/coconut -related deaths to prove they are more dangerous.
